What does GVWR limit?

GVWR is the maximum total loaded weight assigned to the vehicle itself. It is not a trailer-weight rating or a combined-weight rating. When towing, the vehicle-side load includes the load carried through the hitch, but not the weight supported by the trailer’s axles.

Formula and weight basis

Estimated loaded vehicle weight = curb weight + people + cargo + accessories + hitch equipment + tongue/pin weight

Remaining vehicle capacity = GVWR − loaded vehicle weight

Actual-weight mode directly compares the entered loaded or hitched vehicle weight with GVWR. It adds nothing to that value. Estimate mode adds each listed load to curb weight once and labels the result Estimated loaded vehicle weight. Neither mode determines individual axle or tire loading.

Worked example

Start with 5,000 lb of curb weight. Add 350 lb of people, 200 lb of cargo, 100 lb of accessories, 100 lb of hitch equipment, and 600 lb of tongue load. Estimated loaded vehicle weight is 6,350 lb: 88.2% of a 7,200 lb GVWR, leaving 850 lb.

How to interpret the result

Remaining capacity is room under the entered GVWR, not interchangeable with rated payload. Curb-weight inputs may differ from the actual vehicle. Weight-distributing hitch transfer is not modeled in estimate mode; verify the attached vehicle and axle weights on a scale for the configuration being used.

Common mistakes

  • Entering an unhitched vehicle scale weight as a final hitched weight without accounting for trailer load.
  • Adding people, cargo or tongue load again to a weight that already includes them.
  • Using the combined truck-and-trailer scale total as vehicle weight.
  • Assuming remaining GVWR proves rear-axle or tire compliance.

Frequently asked questions

Is loaded vehicle weight the same as GCW?

No. Loaded vehicle weight describes the vehicle side. GCW includes the trailer as well. Use the combined-weight tool for a GCWR comparison.

Can I check a vehicle without a trailer?

Yes. Enter its loaded weight directly, or estimate from curb weight and carried loads with an explicit 0 for tongue/pin weight.

Does estimate mode account for weight distribution?

No. It adds the full entered tongue/pin load for planning. A weight-distributing hitch can change axle loading, so an actual hitched scale measurement is needed to establish those loads.
